From a shed in Hilversum to a top 50 accountancy firm

What began in the late 1960s as a small office run by founder Joop Koeleman in a shed in Hilversum grew, over more than fifty years, into a leading accountancy and advisory organisation with offices throughout the Netherlands. From the very beginning, Koeleman was known for personal involvement, accessibility and quality of service – values that are still at the heart of our organisation today.

Shortly after founding the firm, Joop Koeleman worked for a time with Van der Kolk, with Koeleman focusing on entrepreneurs and Van der Kolk on members of the clergy. In time the two went their separate ways and Joop Koeleman kept his focus on the business market. The firm grew steadily, with a strong position among local small and medium-sized businesses.

In December 2000, Joop Koeleman and Edo de Jong met in Hilversum at the Amrath Hotel on Gijsbrecht van Aemstelstraat. That meeting led to a new phase of collaboration and renewal. Soon afterwards Fred Snelderwaard joined as a partner, laying the foundation for a long period of structural growth and professionalisation.

From the 2000s onwards, Koeleman grew organically by an average of 15% a year. The firm joined the SRA and in 2008 obtained a licence from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) to perform statutory audits. After several moves, Koeleman found its permanent home in 2009 at Vreelandseweg 7 in Hilversum – a location that symbolises the growth and continuity of the organisation. The years that followed were marked by the expansion of the audit practice and the strengthening of the management team. New partners Shirly Zhang, Ronald Jimmink, Lu Wang and Johan Visch all contributed to the further development of the organisation.

From 2013 onwards, Koeleman's audit practice grew strongly. The market for audits changed considerably and Koeleman responded successfully. Today the audit practice has more than 50 staff and the firm ranks among the 30 largest audit practices in the Netherlands. Thanks to international cooperation within the Morison Global network, Koeleman also provides high-quality audit services to internationally operating clients.

Alongside the growth of the audit practice, the compilation and advisory practice expanded as well. Led by Fred Snelderwaard, Erwin Kortekaas and Nick van den Bosch, the ‘Koeleman voor de Zorg’ label was established in Rijswijk with great success, specialising in financial services for healthcare providers and healthcare institutions.
